Our Projects
We have been working with a fellow Balance owner (Jono Rabley Balance 482 “SeaLife”) and the scientific community on a program to gather CO2 and weather data from cruising sailboats. Sailing appeals to a broad range of people and ages, globally. As a spectator sport, more than 941 million people watched the America’s Cup last year. There are estimated to be more than 10,000 cruising sailors that traverse all the world’s oceans.
This program will involve installation of equipment onboard cruising sailboats that is the size of a small box??? and barometer and temperature sensors. This equipment will gather data and transmit directily to several databases. The CO2 data will increase the prediction of the health of the world’s oceans and help the scientific community develop targeted sustainability initiatives. The weather data will feed into weather forecasting models and enhance the accuracy of weather predictions in more remote areas, which is extremely important to sailors crossing oceans.
The technical specifications of equipment to be used to gather CO2 data and methods of managing the metadata has been developed and vetted in connection with the racing sailboat community during Vendѐe Globe races.
Stay tuned for more on this initiative.
